'Dairy cliff' may be avoided, for a year at least

2 hrs.

Farm-state lawmakers have agreed to a one-year extension of the expiring U.S. farm bill that, if enacted, would head off a possible doubling of retail milk prices to $7.00 or more a gallon in 2013.?

The compromise measure resulted from bipartisan discussions in the House of Representatives' Agriculture Committee and talks with colleagues in the U.S. Senate, Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, the House panel's chairman, said in a statement Sunday.?

"It is not perfect - no compromise ever is - but it is my sincere hope that it will pass the House and Senate and be signed by the President by January 1," Lucas, a Republican, said.?

It was not immediately clear whether House and Senate leaders would bring the measure to a vote soon enough to avoid putting the so-called "dairy cliff" milk price spike into action.?

Separately, lawmakers are working on a last-ditch effort to avert the similarly timed "fiscal cliff," when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans are set to start, paired with significant federal spending cuts?

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, in an interview with CNN taped Friday and aired on Sunday, urged Congress to come up with such a solution, if only an extension of the old law that expired nearly three months ago, lest milk prices start rising after Jan. 1, 2013.?

Absent a new bill or an extension of current law, milk prices would revert to rules set in 1949, the last "permanent" farm legislation in the United States. Government price supports would kick in, based on production costs 64 years ago, plus inflation. The potential retail milk price has been estimated at $6.00 to $8.00 a gallon versus current levels near $3.50.?

Lucas said in the statement that time had run out in Congress' current session to enact a new five-year farm bill, as farm-state lawmakers and the dairy lobby had hoped.?

Vilsack told CNN that soaring milk prices - if it comes to that - would ripple throughout all commodities "if this thing goes on for an extended period of time."?

The price of milk will not double on Jan. 1, if Congress fails to act. Instead, prices would rise gradually as supplies are removed from normal markets and land instead in U.S. Department of Agriculture storage facilities.?

With supplies more scarce in normal marketing channels, some milk distributors and dairy product manufacturers could have turned to imported supplies.?

The Department of Agriculture is reviewing a range of options for administering programs should a permanent law become legally effective on Jan. 1, a spokesman said on Friday.?

The Senate passed its new five-year farm bill in June, and the House Agriculture Committee followed with a version in July.?

But the House bill, with large cuts in food-stamp funding for lower-income Americans, has never been brought to a vote by the full House. The Senate and House have for months remained far apart on the issues of food stamps and crop subsidies.?

Lucas said the year-long extension "provides certainty to our producers and critical disaster assistance to those affected by record drought conditions."?

It would also mean another round of the direct subsidies to farmers that cost about $5 billion a year, and that both sides of debate had agreed earlier to eliminate.?

Email Print

The Middleton family party business is now selling royal-themed baby shower and first birthday products. (Party Pieces)

Are Kate Middleton?s parents trying to cash in on their daughter?s pregnancy?

Many Brits think yes, after Carole and Michael Middleton introduced new lines of baby shower and 1st birthday products on their Party Pieces website this week.

?The arrival of a first grandchild is usually a source of great celebration,? the UK?s Daily Mail reported. ?And for Carole and Michael Middleton it would appear to be a good business opportunity too.?

The royal couple announced their pregnancy earlier this month and the national news media closely followed Kate Middleton?s struggle with morning sickness that landed the Duchess of Cambridge in the hospital. Only a few weeks later, the Middleton family?s party supplies website introduced baby products emblazoned with castles and prince and princess crowns.

The ?Little Prince? and ?Little Princess? party sets?which include plates, napkins and cutlery?are described as ?suitable for American-style baby showers, christening parties or first birthday celebrations.?

This isn?t the first time the Middleton family has come under fire for selling royal-themed supplies on their website (which is thought to be profitable since the family recently purchased an estate costing 4.7 million pounds). Many Brits found items themed around the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and the Royal Wedding tacky and inappropriate.

What do you think? Is the Middleton family crossing the line? Or are they simply running a business?

In Brazil, a river dam collides with the past

SANTO ANTONIO, Brazil ? The wind blows in from the river, mingling with the scent of the day's last meal in the kitchen. The smells of work and home for Valcione da Silva. He sits on a worn bench and watches children play on the floor, laughing. Somewhere outside, a siren begins, long and loud.

Da Silva reaches beneath his bench to retrieve two knives, double-edged like daggers. They're not weapons, he says, clattering them together. They're special fishing tools. "Only wood," he says. He ignores the siren.

He pulls out what appears to be a string of plastic Coke bottles dangling from a belt. "Look," he says, pressing into the side of a bottle. It flexes open along a slit in the plastic. When he lets go, it springs closed again. "Very simple. I can keep them alive in here." His fish are delicate, he says.

A moment later a thunderous WHOOMP shakes the little home, and a concussion rolls the air like a wave on the river. Dirt dances on the floor. The nearly bare shelves rattle. Another WHOOMP, and outside in the yard, the leaves of Da Silva's mango tree flicker green and silver.

Da Silva walks to his doorway with his wooden daggers, and looks like a man standing at the edge of the world.

Over the last year the villagers around him have packed up and left. A few days ago the school closed, because all but Da Silva's children had left. His wife was the teacher, so she continues their lessons at home. Santo Antonio would look like a ghost town, except that bulldozers have leveled all the empty homes.

Da Silva watches the trucks as they rumble past, carrying countless tons of earth, blown with dynamite from the hillsides where he was born.

"I want to stay and fish," the 36-year-old says. But it's early December, and he'll have to leave soon; clever men with clipboards have outmaneuvered him.

In the morning, he says, he will do the only thing within his power. He'll break the law.

***

Progress and the past are colliding at Da Silva's doorway.

His small home sits at the foot of the Belo Monte dam site, where a consortium is building the third-largest dam in the world, almost four miles across the Xingu River, a $16-billion construction project in the heart of the Amazon basin.

Indigenous peoples and environmental groups have cried out against the dam for reasons local and global; the people here depend on the mighty Xingu River ? one of the Amazon's largest tributaries ? for transportation, and their livelihoods. Environmental groups say the dam will destroy rain forest that the world needs to breathe. The builders counter that millions of Brazilians need the electricity, and construction continues.

There had always been talk of a gigantic dam. During the dictatorships of the 1970s, important men made speeches about the riches of the Amazon, waiting to be discovered.

In 1972, President Emilio Medici showed up with a construction crew just outside Santo Antonio. The president cut down a Brazil nut tree ? a symbol of the rain forest ? and stood on its fresh stump to make a speech about bringing industry, roads and population to the Amazon. Part of the plan, starting in 1975, was to build a massive hydroelectric dam.

There's a pattern, in Brazilian history, of industries focusing on one natural resource, stripping it, and moving on to another. When Portuguese colonials arrived, the Brazil nut tree was so plentiful that the explorers named the country after it. Now the trees are endangered. Later prospectors found so much gold that they named an entire state Minas Generais, or General Mines. The gold is dwindling too. The same happened with the rubber trees, and the diamonds.

The Amazon's river system, though, seemed to resist progress for many years. The first bridge in the entire Amazon basin wasn't built until 2010. The area was too difficult to reach. Too wild a riverbed. Populated by too wild a people.

The dictator's workers symbolically paved the top of the stump where Medici stood to make his speech, and today it stands shrunken and cracked. Now an enormous concrete power pole looms over the stump. It's one of an endless series of identical towers, marching electricity to the reawakened site of the dam called Belo Monte: the Beautiful Mountain.

Sally Roberts spends first Christmas away from her son Neon due to family rift over her opposition to his cancer treatment

• Told by estranged husband she was not welcome at family gathering
• Understood they have fallen out over her unsuccessful eight-week legal bid
• Uncle Tony Leese said: 'It could be Neon's last Christmas. It's such a shame.'

By Amanda Perthen

|

Neon Roberts spent Christmas Day without his mother because of the bitter family rift caused by her battle to stop him receiving radiotherapy.

Sally Roberts?s unsuccessful eight-week legal bid had put her in conflict with her estranged husband Ben, who told her that she would not be welcome at the family gathering.

It is the first time Sally has been parted from Neon and his twin sister Electra at Christmas ? and last night, her brother Tony Leese said: ?It could be Neon?s last Christmas, it?s such a shame.

Together: Sally Roberts spent Christmas away from her son Neon for the first time due to a family rift

Together: Sally Roberts spent Christmas away from her son Neon for the first time due to a family rift

?I know family feelings are very strong over Sally?s actions, but she?s only doing what any mother would do for their child. It?s wrong Neon should suffer because people are angry at her.?

Ben initially supported Sally?s decision to seek alternative treatment for their seven-year-old son?s brain tumour, but signed a consent for normal medical treatment when he realised time was running out, sparking the court battle.

Mr Leese, 48, first feared that his sister might be barred from seeing Neon after he overheard a conversation at the hospital between Ben and Sally.

?

He said: ?I heard Ben say to Sally, in front of Neon, ?If you want to see Neon at all, you won?t behave like this.? Little Neon?s eyes widened in alarm when he heard it.?

Neon is now due to start his radiotherapy on January 10 ? and recently underwent a second operation to remove cancerous cells from his brain.

?Neon?s made a good recovery from the second operation and has really enjoyed his Christmas,? Mr Leese said.

?I?ve seen a picture of him fooling around wearing false teeth and enormous glasses on Christmas Day.

?That?s the Neon we all love, he?s really cheeky with a great sense of humour. It?s good to see him back to his normal self.

?Hopefully he?ll come through it all ? that?s up to Neon and the big man in the sky. If the family can bond together and give him our love and support he will stand more of a chance.?

Doctors treating Neon give him what is termed ?playtime?, which is time to get used to the radiotherapy machines and the mask they will make to cover the part of his head which will not be irradiated.

Mr Leese said: ?He?s having what they call ?playtime?, he went last Thursday and they started by making a plaster cast of his hand, to get him used to how it feels.

Separated: Sally Roberts' brother Tony said: 'It could be neon's last Christmas. It's such a shame.'

?He had his furry toy tiger Tallulah with him when he went to the hospital and they made a special cast for Tallulah, I thought that was very sweet.

?Neon?s made a good recovery from the second operation and has really enjoyed his Christmas. I?ve seen a picture of him fooling around wearing false teeth and enormous glasses on Christmas Day.

Mr Leese?s Christmas present to his nephew was a fishing rod, and hopes to take Neon away on a fishing trip, once he has got through all his radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Mr Leese, of Island Gardens, east London, said: ?I heard from my mum that Neon was absolutely thrilled by the fishing rod.

'I had told him when he was in hospital that I was going to give him one.

?His eyes had widened with delight and a big smile spread across his face.

I told him that we would go on a fishing trip together and he?s very excited.

?Neon?s a real nature boy and I think there would be nothing better then us sitting together on a bank, watching the birds diving into the river and waiting for a fish to bite.

?But of course, that?s all between me, Neon and the big man in the sky......Neon could be snatched from us at any time, we just don?t know.

?Hopefully he?ll come through it all, if the family can bond together and give him our love and support he will stand more of a chance.?

Despite finally recognising that Mrs Roberts must give up her court fight and concentrate on saving Neon, Mr Leese said he is still very proud of what his sister has achieved.

He said: ?Sally has shone a light on the whole subject of radiotherapy and alternative treatments, even the Judge had sympathy with her views.

?I?m very proud of what she has done, initially she knew nothing about medullablastoma in children, now she has learnt everything she can about it.

?Who knows, in years to come, some of the therapies that have been dismissed as just in the experimental stage now, may be used as standard medical treatments in the future.?

Last night Mrs Roberts declined to comment.

Opinion: Republicans dismayed by current GOP

All sanity seems to have left the ranks of those in charge of the GOP. Increasingly, it is becoming clear that the party is against everything and for nothing. That?s not governing. That?s just lobbing hand grenades. And the GOP is shrinking daily before our eyes.

But those aren?t my words. That stinging assessment comes courtesy of Mark McKinnon, a Texas-based Republican consultant and adviser to George W. Bush.

At this point in the fiscal-cliff crisis, with House Republican ideologues seemingly so willing to plunge America over the precipice, there is indeed no need for me to state the obvious. I can just quote the sane Republicans, as they assail their unhinged brethren. For instance, here?s Congressman Steven LaTourette of Ohio, lamenting the tax-phobic conservatives who refuse to face fiscal reality:

?It weakens the entire Republican Party. ... It?s the continuing dumbing-down of the Republican Party, and we are going to be seen more and more as a bunch of extremists.?

And as a result, we now have a crisis of governance.

There?s no sane reason why President Obama and Congress can?t compromise on a year-end budget deal that raises taxes on top-bracket Americans (while preserving the Bush-era middle-class cuts), and slices into federal spending. Obama has already offered those terms ? a tax hike on people earning $400,000 or more (his original proposal was $250,000), plus an array of spending cuts deep enough to tick off the Democratic left. But the House GOP rank and file said no.

House Speaker John Boehner tried to woo his rank and file with ?Plan B,? proposing a tax hike on millionaires. But again his recalcitrant troops said no. Most Americans believe that a high-end tax hike is essential to any compromise ? every poll says so ? and Obama won re-election after campaigning on that premise. In fact, the Gallup poll released Wednesday reports that 54 percent of Americans endorse Obama?s handling of the fiscal-cliff crisis. The congressional GOP?s approval rating is 26 percent.

But House conservatives don?t care. They?re adamant that the rich should never be compelled to dip into their pockets for the betterment of all.

McKinnon, in his post the other day, ruefully wrote: ?It?s a very odd situation when the losing party is the party refusing to negotiate. It may be how you disrupt, but it is not how you govern.? Fellow Republican strategist John Weaver tweeted in disgust, after Plan B went down, that Boehner is stuck with the impossible task of ?herding cats on crack.?

It appears that the cats haven?t grasped the lesson of that Lincoln movie, which reminds us that compromise is the oil in the governing engine. In the absence of compromise, the engine breaks down. Without a year-end budget deal, two million Americans will immediately lose their federal jobless benefits, and middle-class taxes will rise (among other consequences). And all the polls agree that if we do a cliff dive, congressional Republicans will get the brunt of the blame.

So why are these House people behaving so self-destructively?

Many hail from safe districts where conservative voters dominate. Norman Ornstein, scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, calls these districts ?homogeneous echo chambers.? The incumbents are virtually guaranteed re-election ? as long as they toe the conservative line. If they were to compromise, they risk being challenged in primaries. As the purist group Club for Growth remarked last week, ?the only thing that motivates members of Congress is fear of losing their jobs.?

Actually, there is one other big motivator: slavish fealty to the one-percenters who bankroll the party ? and who are hostile to paying higher taxes.

So says Mike Lofgren, who spent 16 years as a Republican senior analyst on the House and Senate budget committees. He saw the party?s fealty to the rich up close. He quit last year because, in his words, ?my own party, the Republican Party, began to scare me.? From his new book:

?The GOP cares, over and above every other item on its political agenda, about the rich contributors who keep them in office. This is why tax increases on the wealthy have become an absolute Republican taboo.... The GOP?s mission is to protect and further enrich America?s plutocracy. The party?s caterwauling about deficits and debt is so much eyewash to blind the public.?

The crisis of governance might be alleviated if more Republicans spoke that way. Hopefully, some absolutists are still reachable. They should heed Mark McKinnon: ?We become a stronger Republican Party by acting like reasonable human beings who acknowledge reality.?

Broadway dims lights for Klugman, Durning

By David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

Jack Klugman and Charles Durning.

Broadway dimmed its lights at 8 p.m. EST on Thursday and will dim them again on Friday evening, respectively, for beloved industry figures Charles Durning and Jack Klugman, both of whom died Monday.

Durning won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a play for his role as the irascible Mississippi Delta plantation owner Big Daddy Pollitt in a 1990 revival of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," which starred Kathleen Turner.

The actor's extensive Broadway credits stretch back to 1964, and also include the long-running 1972 premiere of Jason Miller's Pulitzer- and Tony-winning ensemble drama, "That Championship Season," about the sour 20th-anniversary victory reunion of a high school basketball team.?He appeared in David Rabe's "In the?Boom Boom Room" in 1973, and opposite Julie Harris in Hugh Leonard's two-hander "The Au Pair Man" that same year.

PHOTOS: David Rooney's Top New York theater picks for 2012

Durning starred with George C. Scott in a 1996 revival of "Inherit the Wind," and re-teamed with Harris in 1997 in a production of "The Gin Game," directed by Charles Nelson Reilly. His final Broadway appearance was in the 2000 revival of Gore Vidal's political satire "The Best Man," with Spalding Gray and Chris Noth.

"It made no difference if he was an ensemble player or leading man, his talent enabled him to show the truth and reveal the story of any role," commented Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League. "He will be greatly missed.?

Starting in the early '60s, Off Broadway was also a frequent home to Durning, most recently in the late Wendy Wasserstein's final play, "Third," ?in 2005. He gave an affecting performance as the elderly father of a New England liberal arts academic, slipping sorrowfully into dementia.

Klugman will forever be associated with the role of slobby Oscar Madison in "The Odd Couple," which he played for five years in the popular ABC comedy series based on the hit Neil Simon play. He originally stepped into that part as a replacement for Walter Matthau during the comedy's two-year Broadway run.

PHOTOS: Broadway musicals that have sung their way to the big screen

The actor's history on the Great White Way dates back even further than Durning's, beginning with a 1952 revival of Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy," alongside John Garfield and Lee J. Cobb.

Klugman received a Tony nomination in 1960 for best featured actor in a musical for his role in the original production of "Gypsy" as Herbie, the long-suffering companion to Ethel Merman's iron-willed stage mother, Rose. His other Broadway appearances included "I'm Not Rappaport" in 1985 and "Three Men on a Horse" in 1993.

"In his many stage performances, as well as on film and TV, we all felt like we knew him personally," said St. Martin of Klugman. "He had that kind of approachability. As with all fine actors, he made the work look effortless."

For his final Broadway appearance, Klugman was reunited with playwright Simon in a 1997 revival of "The Sunshine Boys," co-starring with his longtime "Odd Couple" sparring partner?Tony Randall?as a pair of ill-tempered old vaudevillians.

Chicago PMI Employment Index - Business Insider

Earlier this morning, we learned that the Chicago PMI climbed to 51.6 in December.? This was slightly ahead of economists expectations.

The gain was largely driven by a jump in the new orders sub-index.

However, the employment index collapsed to a three-year low.

Should we be worried?

TD Securities' Eric Green thinks we should take a deep breath and think about what happened.

"That may look worse than it really is, however," he writes. "The drop in employment reflects the prior weakness in new orders in November and to a lesser degree owing to the fiscal cliff which breeds well understood uncertainty."

Indeed, the exact opposite of what happened in this month's employment index could happen in an upcoming month.

"With the bounce back in new orders, employment will also bounce back, and ultimately everything flows from new orders which is now comfortably back above its 6m average of 50.8," writes Green. "Fade the weakness in employment and treat the release in much the same way as the headline would suggest which is better, not worse."

?The L Word? vs Hollywood's portrayal of Lesbians | The Guardian ...

?The L Word? vs Hollywood?s portrayal of Lesbians

"The L Word" vs Hollywood's portrayal of Lesbians

Just because a woman is a lesbian doesn?t mean she will hit on every woman she comes across. Doesn?t even mean she finds every woman attractive. She might just find you interesting to talk too and interesting at the moment still women with their insecurities get shell shocked when the word lesbian rolls off one?s tongue. Just because a woman says she a lesbian doesn?t mean she is trying to get in your pants or that you will get some awful disease. Besides who to say that your even atractive to that person, you may not even be that person?s type and thats physical and mental so hold your judgement and get to know someone first. Last I checked being lesbian wasn?t a disease but a lifestyle that many women live due to their natural attraction to the same sex.

"The L Word" vs Hollywood's portrayal of Lesbians

It?s sad to hear of these stereotypes people have of lesbians. Mainly of lesbians not being able to commit, flirting and having sex with every woman they come across. This isn?t true for the majority of lesbians but yes for some this is what they do. However, keep in mind straight men, women and gay men do this too so don?t single lesbians out. That is just a small portion of the LGBT community. A portion who either are ?experimenting? or just confused on what they like but not all lesbians live like this.

I know of lesbians who are in committed, loving relationships and don?t do the open relationships or have sex with everyone they come across. Most lesbians really do want that one person to be committed too and committed to them. Being lesbian is not about sleeping with a bunch of women and having threesomes and such. Just like heterosexual couples and gay men, lesbians want to be committed to one person as well. It?s sad though when Hollywood portrays lesbians as such and college girls think that?s what being lesbian is about and want to ?experiment.? When truthfully that isn?t the real lesbian lifestyle but society making a mockery of the lesbian lifestyle. Being lesbian isn?t a trend or something you choose but an attraction to someone you love/like and have real feelings for. It?s not about being a player and getting as many girls you can or trying a threesome with your boyfriend. Society has distorted what the real lesbian lifestyle is like but if you watch the show ?The L Word? you can get a better glimpse of what lesbians go through. Where each character represents everything from being in a committed relationship with kids to the player type.

"The L Word" vs Hollywood's portrayal of Lesbians

Just like heterosexual couples there are issues of infidelities and other issues. Lesbian couples aren?t perfect just as heterosexual or gay couples aren?t. However, don?t let what you see on TV distort how you perceive lesbians. For lesbians are loving, caring and family oriented just like their gay and straight counterparts.

Perhaps this is why another lesbian network show is needed and one that is created by a lesbian and not someone ?knowing? of the lifestyle.

GOP willing to bend on issues after election

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? For years, Republicans have adhered fiercely to their bedrock conservative principles, resisting Democratic calls for tax hikes, comprehensive immigration reform and gun control. Now, seven weeks after an electoral drubbing, some party leaders and rank-and-file alike are signaling a willingness to bend on all three issues.

What long has been a nonstarter for Republicans ? raising tax rates on wealthy Americans ? is now backed by GOP House Speaker John Boehner in his negotiations with President Barack Obama to avert a potential fiscal crisis. Party luminaries, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, have started calling for a wholesale shift in the GOP's approach to immigration after Hispanic voters shunned Republican candidates. And some Republicans who previously championed gun rights now are opening the door to restrictions following a schoolhouse shooting spree earlier this month.

"Put guns on the table. Also, put video games on the table. Put mental health on the table," Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said last week. Other prominent Republicans echoed him in calling for a sweeping review of how to prevent tragedies like the Newtown, Conn., massacre. Among those who were open to a re-evaluation of the nation's gun policies were Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.

"You've got to take all these things into consideration," Grassley said.

And yet, the head of the National Rifle Association, silent for a week after the Newtown shootings, has proposed staffing schools with armed police, making clear the NRA, which tends to support the GOP, will continue pushing for fewer gun restrictions, not more.

Meanwhile, Boehner's attempt to get his own members on board with a deficit-reduction plan that would raise taxes on incomes of more than $1 million failed last week, exposing the reluctance of many in the Republican caucus to entertain more moderate fiscal positions.

With Republican leaders being pulled at once to the left and to the right, it's too soon to know whether the party that emerges from this identity crisis will be more or less conservative than the one that was once so confident about the 2012 elections. After all, less than two months have passed since the crushing defeat of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who moved far to the right during the primary season and, some in the party say, lost the general election as a result.

But what's increasingly clear is that the party is now engaged in an uncomfortable and very public fight over whether its tenets, still firmly held within the party's most devout ranks, conflict with the views of Americans as a whole.

Many Republicans recognize that to remain relevant with voters whose views are changing, they too must change.

"We lost the election because we were out of touch with the American people," said John Weaver, a senior adviser to past presidential candidates John McCain, the GOP nominee in 2008, and Jon Huntsman, who ran for the nomination this year.

The polling suggests as much.

While Republican candidates for years have adamantly opposed tax increases on anyone, an Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this month found roughly half of all Americans supported allowing George W. Bush-era tax cuts to expire on those earning more than $250,000 a year.

Most GOP candidates ? Romney among them ? also long have opposed allowing people in the country illegally to get an eventual path to citizenship. But exit polls from the Nov. 6 election showed most voters favored allowing people working in the U.S. illegally to stay.

And gun control has for decades been anathema to Republicans. But a Washington Post/ABC News poll published last week, following the Connecticut shooting, showed 54 percent of Americans now favor stronger restrictions.

This is the backdrop as Republicans undergo a period of soul-searching after this fall's electoral shellacking. Romney became the fifth GOP nominee in six elections to lose the national popular vote to the Democratic candidate. Republicans also shed seats in their House majority and lost ground to majority Democrats in the Senate.

Of particular concern is the margin of loss among Hispanics, a group Obama won by about 70 percent to 30 percent.

It took only hours after the loss for national GOP leaders to blame Romney for shifting to the right on immigration ? and signal that the party must change.

Jindal, a prospective 2016 presidential contender, was among the Republicans calling for a more measured approach by the GOP. And even previously hardline opponents of immigration reform ? like conservative talk show host Sean Hannity ? said the party needs to get over its immigration stance heavily favoring border security over other measures.

"What you have is agreement that we as a party need to spend a lot of time and effort on the Latino vote," veteran Republican strategist Charlie Black said.

When Congress returned to Washington after the election to start a debate over taxes and spending, a number of prominent Republicans, including Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, signaled they would be willing to abandon their pledges against raising taxes ? as long as other conditions were met ? as part of a package of proposals to avoid a catastrophic budget meltdown.

Leading the effort was Boehner, who has told Obama he would allow taxes to be increased on the wealthiest Americans, as well as on capital gains, estates and dividends, as part of a deal including spending cuts and provisions to slow the growth of entitlements. Obama, meanwhile, also has made concessions in the talks to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff by agreeing to a higher income threshold for tax rate increases, while insisting that Congress grant him the authority to raise the debt ceiling. Both sides have spent the past several weeks bickering over the terms.

While some Democrats quickly called for more stringent gun laws, most Republicans initially were silent. And their virtual absence from the debate suggested that some Republicans who champion gun rights at least may have been reconsidering their stances against firearms restrictions.

By the Monday after the Connecticut shooting, MSNBC talk show host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman from Florida, called for reinstating the ban on assault-style weapons, which he had opposed. The ban expired in 2004, despite support for the ban from Republican President George W. Bush. Referring to the shooting, Scarborough said: "I knew that day that the ideologies of my past career were no longer relevant to the future that I want, that I demand, for my children."

The next day, Grassley and Kingston were among the Republicans saying they were at least willing to discuss stronger gun laws.

"The party is at a point where it wants to have those discussions in public, where people feel comfortable differing from what is perceived as the party orthodoxy," Republican consultant Dan Hazelwood said.

If silence is a signal, shifts on other issues could be coming, chief among them gay marriage, which the GOP base long has opposed. Exit polls found half of all Americans say same-sex marriage should be legally recognized.

After three states ? Washington, Maryland and Maine ? voted to legalize gay marriage last month, the Republican leadership generally has remained quiet on the issue. And there has been no effort in the House or Senate to push major legislation, only narrower proposals, such as a move in the Armed Services Committee to bar gay marriages at military facilities.

But in a sign that the fight over gay marriage also may be waning within the GOP base, Newt Gingrich said it was time for Republicans to accept shifting public opinion.

The former House speaker, who oversaw passage of the Defense of Marriage Act in Congress and helped finance state campaigns to fight gay marriage in 2010, said in a Huffington Post interview that the party should work toward acceptance of rights for gay couples, while still distinguishing them from marriage.

"The momentum is clearly now in the direction in finding some way to . accommodate and deal with reality," Gingrich said.

Doctors on Call: Smoking does more than cause cancer

HOW TO QUIT

Millions of successful quitters have invented lots of creative methods to stop smoking, according to ?Why Quit News,? as printed by Livestrong.com.
Here are the top ways:

Cold turkey
Quitting cold turkey, meaning all at once, instantly transforms you into a non-smoker. Joel Spitzer, director of ?Freedom From Tobacco? in Evanston, Ill., says the cold turkey motto is simply ?Never Take Another Puff.? Spitzer says 91 percent of successful quitters do it cold turkey.

Group support
The American Lung Association recommends quitting with a group of like-minded people. You can support each other, trade winning strategies and swap successful tips. The most successful groups are conducted by trained, experienced leaders.

Hypnosis
In a 2009 report by physicians at the American Cancer Society, hypnosis helped some people quit smoking, but techniques, practitioners and success rates vary widely. Coaches at Smoking Cessation.org report a 66 percent success rate with a four-session protocol administered by licensed psychologists.

Replacement
Nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT, replaces cigarettes with patches, gums, nasal sprays, lozenges or inhalers. These enable tapering off the addictive nicotine so you can manage your cravings in gradual steps, while eliminating smoke and its other harmful chemicals from your lungs.

Sabotage
Sabotage your habit. The American Lung Association advises quitters to prepare by tossing out their ashtrays, lighters and matches. Also, eliminate triggers like coffee and alcohol from your pantry, then buy tea and other beverages. Remove every cigarette from your home. Without tobacco and its paraphernalia, you cannot smoke.

Phone a friend
The American Cancer Society says all U.S. states and the District of Columbia provide free telephone links to trained counselors who match programs to individuals? needs. Phone counseling is twice as effective as quitting without help. Florida?s phone program can be reached at (877) 822-6669, while Georgia?s is at (877) 270-7867.

Zyban
Bupropion, brand named Zyban, reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms. It can be prescribed alone or with NRT. Start one or two weeks before quitting tobacco. Do not use Zyban if you have seizures, serious head injury, bipolar or eating disorders, or a tendency to abuse alcohol.

Chantix
Varenicline, brand named Chantix, interferes with brain receptors for nicotine, diminishing the enjoyment of smoking, and reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The ACS reports that several studies have shown varenicline more than doubles success rates for smoking cessation. Other studies suggest better short-term effectiveness than with bupropion.

Nicotine Anonymous
This is a 12-step program for living nicotine-free. Nicotine Anonymous offers group support along with the ?12 Steps? approach pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. The toll-free number is (877) 879-6422 for printed materials, information and meeting schedules.

Follow the money
The American Lung Association says to reward yourself for quitting. The average cost of a pack of cigarettes in Florida is $6 per pack. Smoking a pack a day would cost $2,184 per year. If you think about what else you can buy with that, you will probably find a way to stop smoking.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI wished Christmas peace to the world Tuesday, decrying the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria and urging Israelis and Palestinians to find the courage to negotiate.

Delivering the Vatican's traditional Christmas day message from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Benedict also encouraged Arab spring nations, especially Egypt, to build just and respectful societies.

He prayed that China's new leaders respect religion, a reference to persecution Chinese Roman Catholics have at times endured under communism.

As the 85-year-old pontiff, bundled up in an ermine-trimmed red cape, gingerly stepped foot on the balcony, the pilgrims, tourists and Romans below backing St. Peter's Square erupted in cheers.

Less than 12 hours earlier, Benedict had led a two-hour long Christmas Eve ceremony in the basilica. He sounded hoarse and looked weary as he read his Christmas message and then holiday greetings in 65 languages.

In his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, which traditionally reviews world events and global challenges, Benedict prayed that "peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict that does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims."

He called for easier access to help refugees and for "dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."

Benedict prayed that God "grant Israelis and Palestinians courage to end long years of conflict and division, and to embark resolutely on the path to negotiation."

Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the Palestinian statehood bid, saying it was a ploy to bypass negotiations, something the Palestinians deny. Talks stalled four years ago.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said that in a meeting with the pope last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "emphasized our total readiness to resume negotiations." The Palestinians have not dropped their demand that Israel first stop settlement activities before returning to the negotiating table.

Hours earlier, in the ancient Bethlehem church built over the site where tradition holds Jesus was born, candles illuminated the sacred site and the joyous sound of prayer filled its overflowing halls.

Overcast skies and a cold wind in the Holy Land didn't dampen the spirits of worshippers in the biblical West Bank town. Bells pealed and long lines formed inside the fourth-century Church of the Nativity complex as Christian faithful waited to see the grotto that is Jesus' traditional birthplace.

Duncan Hardock, 24, a writer from MacLean, Va., traveled to Bethlehem from the republic of Georgia, where he had been teaching English. After passing through the separation barrier Israel built to ward off West Bank attackers, he walked to Bethlehem's Manger Square where the church stands.

"I feel we got to see both sides of Bethlehem in a really short period of time," Hardock said. "On our walk from the wall, we got to see the lonesome, closed side of Bethlehem ... But the moment we got into town, we're suddenly in the middle of the party."

Bethlehem lies 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Jerusalem. Entry to the city is controlled by Israel, which occupied the West Bank in 1967.

For those who couldn't fit into the cavernous Bethlehem church, a loudspeaker outside broadcast the Christmas day service to hundreds of faithful in the square.

Their Palestinian hosts, who welcome this holiday as the high point of their city's year, were especially joyous this season, proud of the United Nations' recognition of an independent state of Palestine just last month.

"From this holy place, I invite politicians and men of good will to work with determination for peace and reconciliation that encompasses Palestine and Israel in the midst of all the suffering in the Middle East," said the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal in his annual address.

Back at the Vatican, Benedict offered encouragement to countries after the Arab spring of democracy protests. He had a special word for Egypt, "blessed by the childhood of Jesus."

Without citing the tumultuous politics and clashes in the region, he urged the North African region to build societies "founded on justice and respect for the dignity of every person."

Benedict prayed for the return of peace in Mali and harmony in Nigeria, where, he recalled "savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians."

The Vatican for decades has been worried about the well-being of its flock in China, who are loyal to the pope in defiance of the communist's government support of an officially sponsored church, and relations between Beijing and the Holy See are often tense.

Speaking about China's newly installed regime leaders, Benedict expressed hope that "they will esteem the contribution of the religions, in respect for each other, in such a way that they can help to build a fraternal society for the benefit of that noble people and of the whole world."

Acknowledging Latin America's predominant Christian population, he urged government leaders to carry out commitments to development and to fighting organized crime.

In Britain, the royal family was attending Christmas Day church services at St. Mary Magdelene Church on Queen Elizabeth II's sprawling Sandringham estate, though there were a few notable absences. Prince William is spending the holiday with his pregnant wife Kate and his in-laws in the southern England village of Bucklebury, while Prince Harry is serving with British troops in Afghanistan.

Later Tuesday, the queen will deliver her traditional, pre-recorded Christmas message, which for the first time will be broadcast in 3D.
