Jennifer Asbury
Instructor of Nursing
Jennifer Asbury graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 2009, and earned the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Texas Christian University in 1991.
Asbury previously served as chief nursing officer at Stamford Memorial Hospital?s free standing health clinic in Stamford, TX, where she was responsible for administrative management and for providing clinical expertise. She was also responsible for nurse recruitment and retention, nursing education, and overseeing the inpatient/outpatient diabetes self-management program.
Asbury has also worked as the education coordinator and the training center coordinator at Abilene Regional Medical Center. She spent six years at Hendrick Medical Center as a registered nurse, where she worked in critical care and the congestive heart failure unit, and was a nurse recruiter and employee health coordinator in the human resources office.

Dr. Bob Brooks
Dean of the HSU School of Music and Fine Arts
Dr. Bob Brooks comes to HSU as the new dean of the School of Music and Fine Arts from Dallas Baptist University where he served as the associate dean of the Gary Cook Graduate School of Leadership. He has also served as the director of the Master of Arts in Worship Leadership program at DBU, and during previous stints at DBU, was an adjunct professor of church music and voice.
Brooks brings his Julliard music background to students at HSU where he worked as the director of educational outreach, providing oversight of nine separate programs. As part of the Julliard faculty, he taught Public Service Performance: Philosophy and Practice, and was coordinator of the Cluck Community Service Outreach at The Julliard School.
Brooks brings a deep ministerial background to HSU as a former minister of music at Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. He also served as minister of music at Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Dallas.
Brooks holds a 1993 Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned a Master of Music degree from the seminary in 1984. He holds two degrees from Baylor University, a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Music Education, both earned in 1980.
Brooks is no stranger to HSU. During his long career in both ministry and education, he served as an assistant professor of church music in the HSU School of Music from 1998 to 2001. He also chaired the Department of Church Music while at HSU.

Dr. Emily Dean
Assistant Professor of Educational Studies; Director of the Center for Literacy and Learning
Dr. Emily Dean earned a Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University in 2007. Dean also holds a Master of Education degree from A&M (2002) with a specialization in reading, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in interdisciplinary studies from Southwest Texas State University in 1997.
Dean has worked as a reading specialist and dyslexia interventionalist in private practice and for the Language Learning Center in College Station.
Dean was a graduate assistant lecturer for Texas A&M from 2003-2006. She has served as the department chair and assistant professor of curriculum and instruction at McMurry University since 2006.
She has extensive education and training as a dyslexic specialist and was a member of the editorial review board for the Journal of Literacy Research and Instruction. Dean has also served as a reviewer for publications and presentations for the International Dyslexia Association, and reviewer of presentations for the National Reading Conference.
Dean recently was chosen as one of 34 community members to participate in Leadership Abilene 2011 and the Abilene Leaders of Tomorrow Program. She will also be honored by Abilene Biz Magazine as one of 20 Under 40.

Kerri Fisher
Assistant Professor of Social Work
Kerri Fisher comes to HSU?s Department of Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin Elementary School where she has worked since 2008. Fisher was the school social worker and is credited with establishing the school?s first comprehensive social work program.
Fisher graduated with a Master of Science in Social Work degree from the University of Texas in 2008, and received her undergraduate degree in psychology at Howard Payne University in 2003.
Fisher has served as a field instructor since 2009 for students majoring in social work at UT, and worked as a teaching assistant while attending UT. Fisher worked as an adjunct professor at HPU, teaching sociology this past spring semester.
She is also a popular lecturer and is a founding member of the School Social Work Alliance of Texas and a member of the School Social Work Conference Committee at UT.

Carrie Jones
Assistant Professor of Art
Carrie Jones earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2010. It was there she also earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2007. She has also studied at the Santa Reparata International School of Art in Florence, Italy.
Jones has an extensive resume of art exhibitions and awards for her photography. She has been teaching as an adjunct professor with TAMUCC since 2008 and served as a graduate assistant in digital photography and a lecturer. In 2008 she was a lecturer at Texas A&M University ? International for UT International in Laredo, TX.
Jones has worked as a freelance photographer and has experience in management, overseeing the business operations of a community business association from 2007-2009.
Jones also worked in an internship for the Go Red Campaign, American Heart Association in 2008. In 2009 she received the Osage Nation Scholarship of Academic Achievement.?

Olivia King
Instructor of Nursing
Olivia King moves from her position as the simulation lab coordinator at the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing to nursing instructor. King has been at PHSSN since 2008.
King is working toward her Family Nurse Practitioner Certification at HSU. She holds an Associate in Nursing from Douglas College of Nursing in British Columbia and a BSN from Grand Canyon University. She is certified in trauma nurse core curriculum, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric emergency, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and pediatric advanced life support.
King started her career in nursing in 1977 at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She worked as a staff nurse at St. Mary?s Hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia, and as a pediatrics and emergency nurse in at St. John Hospital in New Brunswick, Canada.
From 1994-2001 King was an emergency room nurse at Covenant Health Systems in Lubbock, TX. King has worked as a staff nurse in PACU at Abilene Regional Medical Center and as a trauma center nurse at Hendrick Health Systems.

Truby Miller
Instructor of Educational Studies
Trube Miller has been added to the Department of Educational Studies to assist with autism education. Miller recently earned a PhD in special education with autism emphasis from the University of North Texas.
She also holds two master?s degrees. One from the University of North Texas in 2006?in special education with an emphasis in autism and the other from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in counseling in 2003. Miller also earned a bachelor?s degree in psychology at SOSU in 2000.
Miller is a board certified behavior analyst intern with anticipated licensure this November and a licensed professional counselor intern with an expected licensure date this December.
Miller has worked as a behavioral specialist in special education and as an in-home trainer for the Taylor-Callahan Educational Cooperative since 2010. She has been a graduate teaching fellow at UNT ?since 2008, and from 2002-2009 worked as a school counselor in the Gunter Independent School District.
Miller is a member of the Leadership Committee for Autism Speaks and was selected as Who?s Who Among Graduate Students. She is currently a member of the Association of Behavioral Analysis International and the Texas Association for Behavioral Analysis.

Dr. Jeremy Rhodes
Assistant Professor of Sociology
Dr. Jeremy Rhodes earned his PhD in sociology from Baylor University this past spring. He received a master?s degree in sociology in 2008 from Baylor, and a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology and speech communication, graduating summa cum laude, from Stephen F. Austin University in 2001.
Rhodes has served as an instructor in the department of sociology at Baylor since 2009. He worked as a teaching assistant and guest lecturer at Baylor 2006.
During the recent annual meeting for the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion in Baltimore, Maryland, Rhodes presented a study examining the effects of congregational embeddedness on political tolerance among evangelical Protestants.
Rhodes was nominated for an Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award at Baylor University Graduate School in 2010.
He is also the author of the article ?Choosing Sides: An Exploration of Role Conflict among Evangelical Democrats" in an upcoming publication Sociology of Religion.
Rhodes is a popular speaker and presenter, speaking most recently at the annual meeting for the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Indira Tyler
Associate Professor of Nursing and BSN Director
Dr. Indira Tyler comes to HSU from the Denver School of Nursing where she has served as an associate dean and associate professor?since 2010.?She also worked as the assistant director of nursing.
Tyler earned a PhD in nursing from Hampton University, Hampton, Virginia in 2010. She earned a BA in English and government at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, in 1993, and earned a second bachelor?s degree in nursing from the University of South Carolina. She earned a master?s degree with a major in family nurse practice in 2005 from Hampton University.
Tyler has also been an instructor for the University of Phoenix and a lecturer at Fayetteville State University. She has worked as a clinical staff nurse for Santee Hematology and Oncology, has been part of the diabetes management team for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and has been a teacher for the Houston Independent School District.?She is a public speaker and workshop presenter, and author of numerous publications.
Tyler has been honored by the National League for Nursing and has been named in Who?s Who Among Executives and Professionals in Nursing and Healthcare.

Dr. Janet Viola
Associate Professor of Nursing
Dr. Janet Viola comes to HSU from Ursuline College, Pepperpike, Ohio, where she has served as an assistant professor and director of the accelerated nursing program since 2005.?
Viola has worked as the director of professional development for Emery Medical Management in Cleveland, Ohio, and was the director for clinical outreach for the Gulf War at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
She has served at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she worked as a Veteran Affairs and Military Department of Defense liaison, and at the U.S. Army, Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu.
She earned her doctorate at the American School of Professional Psychology in Honolulu and studied for an advanced specialization in behavioral medicine at St. Bonaventure University in New York where she also earned a master?s degree in education and counseling. She has a BA from Alfred University, Alfred, New York, and holds a BSN from Alfred University.
Viola retired from the Army at the level of major after serving 21 years. She earned two Meritorious Service Medals and was named Military Service Officer of the Year. She is also a coveted public speaker.

Dr. Bryan Yorton
Associate Professor of Philosophy, Head of Department of Philosophy
Dr. Bryan Yorton has been named head of the HSU Department of Philosophy. Yorton received a PhD in philosophy from the University of Texas in 1995. He earned a master?s degree in humanities from Western Kentucky University, a BA in philosophy from Westmont College, and an associate degree in liberal arts from Judson Baptist College, Portland, Oregon.
Yorton comes to HSU from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, where he served as an associate professor of philosophy. Yorton also coordinated the Honors program, and chaired the religion and philosophy department.
Yorton was an instructor for Navy College aboard the U.S.S. Coronado and earlier served as a visiting assistant professor at Whitworth College. He has worked as an instructor in international relations for St. Mary?s University Graduate School, an instructor at the University of Texas, and has also been an instructor at Western Kentucky University.
Yorton also specializes in ethics, the philosophy of religion, the history of philosophy, and existentialism.
