Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million per month

DNP It's official, Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million a month

While it was pretty clear that ASUS' Google-partnered Nexus 7 contributed heavily to the Taiwanese maker's healthy Q3 results, there was no official confirmation on its exact sales figures so far. ASUS CFO David Chang has now come clean and told the WSJ that the 7-incher is close to touching the one million per month mark, just about double the rate of sales at its launch. While this number is a fraction of the iPad's sales (14 million in the last quarter alone), it could well go up due to the recent price drop and the addition of new 32GB models to the portfolio. On the flip side, the Nexus 7 is sure to face heat from close rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini, while the mega-spec Nexus 10 will also entice some buyers away from ASUS' reach.

iPad Mini reviewers agree: It's a mini iPad

16 hrs.

Apple's iPad Mini will be available for purchase this Friday, and the first batch of reviews has hit the Internet. They seem to agree on a few points: It's built?like an iPad, the screen is a step down, and it's the most hold-able tablet yet.

Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal says, "You can think of it either as a low-cost, compact cousin of the full-sized iPad, or a costlier, larger-screen alternative to the 7-inch models." And indeed, whether the iPad Mini is a luxury or a?bargain depends on what you're considering as alternatives.

The competition at the $200 level is formidable: Google's Nexus 7, Amazon's Kindle Fire, and Barnes & Noble's Nook HD. All offer higher-resolution screens and similarly small form factors. Yet the iPad mini costs $129 more to start. What does it have that the others don't?

According to pretty much every reviewer: The look and feel. "If the iPhone 5 is reminiscent of jewelry, the iPad mini is like a solidly made watch," says The Verge. "When you hold it, it almost feels like you?re just holding a sheet of glass," says TechCrunch. "If there were an industry award for Tablet You Can Most Easily Envision Holding For Extended Periods of Time, the Mini would be a runaway winner," says Time's TechLand. And Fox News gives perhaps the best compliment of all: "When I picked it up, I was reminded of the first time I held a first-generation iPhone."

Clearly, the fit and finish?of the device is superior ? which should probably be expected from something that costs half again as much as the devices it's being compared to.

And then there's the fact that it runs a ton of iPad apps out of the box ? a big selling point for people who don't want to worry about such things when migrating to a new device. "Nearly every larger iPad app I've thrown at it feels usable and comfortable at this smaller screen size," CNET assures us. And the famous iPad battery life is intact, too: Engadget's tests put it at 12 hours and 43 minutes, the best out of all the tablets they've measured.

One thing every reviewer acknowledges but for which?no one seemed inclined?to ding Apple is the screen. The 1024x768 resolution is the same as the original iPad's, yet not only do the iPad Mini's cheaper competitors now?have higher-res?screens, but many smartphones do as well! Reviewers seem to let Apple off the hook by saying that since the screen is smaller, those pixels are packed more closely together than on the iPad 2 or original model.

"Nobody's going to complain about the sharpness," suggests David Pogue at?the New?York Times, but that's probably?not true. Millions have grown accustomed to the sharp displays since the iPhone 4 debuted in 2010, and the iPad Mini's big brother was a huge hit specifically because of the "sharpness" of the Retina display. And while reviewers rightly?praise the Mini's larger 7.9-in. screen in comparison to its 7-in. competition, what they're saying about screen real estate isn't strictly true.

Apple's tablet may have more square inches, but the 1440x900 pixel display of the Nook HD, though smaller physically, can display more words, more clearly ? and the same is true to a lesser extent of other 7" tablets.?

Giving Apple a pass on the screen is a bit questionable, but in fairness to the iPad Mini, its screen is technically more sharp than the?iPad 2's, and by all accounts, this miniaturized iPad is excellent in everything but resolution.

Should you buy it? Screen gripes aside, the sturdy, pretty iPad mini definitely allows you do do a few new things: read one-handed, for instance. Being small and light also makes it a good choice for kids.?

To?really know whether it's worth it, though, it might be a good idea to see the iPad Mini with your own eyes. Of course, once you pick one up, as the reviewers note, you may find it hard to put down ??regardless of your reservations.

If you choose to fight the urge, though, no one will blame you. Given Apple's typical pace in improving its devices,?it seems likely that we'll see a Retina-display Mini by this time next year, if not sooner ? and maybe at a more competitive price.

Writing Search Ads in Context - Search Engine Watch (#SEW)

A mother gives her son two ties for his birthday. He goes upstairs, puts on one of the ties, and comes back down to show his mother. She looks him up and down, then says, ?What?s the matter, you didn?t like the other tie??

This mother understands something that many search advertisers don?t: we make all our choices in context. Meaning, when we?re trying to select one option, we?re comparing it to all the other options in our consciousness at that moment. We?re trying to figure out which one will best meet our current needs.

Why We Limit Our Options

If I have a $5 bill and I walk past a smoothie bar, I?ll immediately start the mental calculus of whether I would be better served by a Very Berry Blast, a Pina Colada Shake, or a Peanut Cacao Freezee.

Noticeably absent from my choices are:

  1. Buying a set of hinges to fix the broken garden gate.
  2. Donating the money to the Land Institute.
  3. Putting the money into my kids? 529 plan.

Why wouldn?t I compare a frozen cup of fruit chunks to any of these arguably much better causes? Why does my brain exclude them from consideration?

Because of context. Making decisions, it turns out, expends a tremendous amount of energy. Not just metaphorical energy, but real, caloric, glucose-guzzling energy.

And allowing billions of choices equal time would blow our daily energy budget within one minute of waking in the morning. So our brains ruthlessly expunge everything that doesn?t seem immediately relevant to the decision at hand.

Books like Dan Ariely?s ?Predictably Irrational? and Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein?s ?Nudge? are textbooks in using this tendency of the brain to frame other people?s decisions. If we?re conscious of the phenomenon, we can engage in ?choice architecture? to increase the likelihood that people will select one option over another.

Context in Search Marketing

The search results page is the ultimate in controlled and contrived choice. The user types in a short phrase indicating their current need, and anywhere from 10 to 25 listings appear, all vying for that user?s click.

The question for advertisers is, how can you use the principles of choice architecture to get that click for yourself.

Defining Which Click You Want

chicken-coopThe first, most crucial step is to realize that you can?t get ? and don?t want ? every single click. You must decide which subset of the search market you?re going to attract with your ad.

For example, if you?re bidding on the keyword ?chicken coop,? you need to decide if you?re catering to a continuum from extremely DIY (?just give me the plans and I?ll build it myself?) to extremely DIFM (Do It For Me: ?build it, ship it, and set it up wherever you think it should go?). In between go coop kits, collaborative builders, and many other options.

For this example, let?s say you cater to DIYers looking for chicken coop plans, as your main business is selling backyard chicken supplies, and your plans are an effective lead generator.

Reading the SERP

Once you?ve identified your ideal customer, it?s time to view the search engine results page (SERP) through their eyes. Think of search advertising like chess: you wouldn?t make a move based on looking at your pieces, while ignoring those of your opponent.

Which ads speak to the primary need of your ideal customer? Which ones make some sort of empathetic connection?

chicken-coop-3-google-ppc-ads

The top and bottom ad above both target the DIYer, with different emotional appeals. LivingtheCountryLife.com uses words that appeal to ?progressives?: amazing, inspired. By contrast, CatawbaCoops.com appeals more to ?conservatives.? Both the ?old world styled? descriptor and the purposefully ungrammatical headline with its double negative speak to someone turned off by ?new and shiny? things.

The middle ad, while not targeting the DIYer, does raise a potentially important criterion: ease of cleaning.

As an advertiser, your challenge and opportunity is to claim a piece of territory in this fray. To position your offer in this already raging competition.

Invoking Your Ideal Customer Avatar

You can?t do this effectively unless you know something about your ideal customer. You can use a comprehensive process to achieve this kind of deep empathy through Avatar creation. Now, in the context of the SERP, you harness those insights to make an appeal that is more relevant and emotionally engaging than those of your competitors.

For example, let?s say this is your Avatar: a suburban mom named Shannon who shops at the farmer?s market, tries to buy organic and local food for her family, and wants four backyard chickens for a variety of reasons:

  1. Her dad grew up on a farm, and she wants to give her rushed, hyper-programmed suburban kids a taste of farm life.
  2. She worries about the treatment of chickens used in commercial laying operations.
  3. She wants her kids to eat the healthiest food possible.
  4. Her city just approved a chicken-friendly ordinance, and she wants to be a leader in her neighborhood.

Now, she also works a full-time job and doesn?t have a ton of time to build something. But she enjoys woodworking, and is proud of her skills. When she was a teenager, she and her dad would bond by doing little projects in the garage.

From this exercise, here are the messages I think will resonate with Shannon:

  1. Not all coops are equally healthy for chickens. Make sure you get the facts before building something ?pretty.?
  2. ?A taste of farm life in the suburbs.? This coop design honors farming traditions while conforming to suburban rules and mores.
  3. Easy to gather the eggs. Some coops look great, but make egg gathering a royal pain. This design will have your kids volunteering for the chore, not arguing about who has to do it.
  4. A chicken coop that?s so pretty, clean, and quiet, it will convert your neighbors. Some of them may be worried about the smell, about the noise, about the looks, about avian flu, about all sorts of things. When they see this coop, they?ll relax. Next thing you know, they?ll want chickens too.

An Ad Writing Contest

OK, now it?s your turn. Based on the assumptions I?ve made so far, write a Google ad that Shannon will click in preference to the other two DIY chicken coop ads. The winner gets an autographed copy of ?Google AdWords For Dummies?.

Rules: 130 characters total (25 for the headline, 35 each for the two description lines and display URL). You can invent an appealing URL.

Post your entries (you can create as many different ads as you like) as comments to this article. People can vote on their favorite by ?Liking? individual comments. I?ll make the final decision, but since I?m pretty lazy, I?ll weigh the voting very heavily.

Have fun! Now if you?ll excuse me, I?ve got to gather some eggs.

How Selling Your Home is Like Playing ... - DIY Home Staging Tips

I love baseball. It?s the only sport I watch on television.

Baseball is leisurely, unlike basketball. It?s gentlemanly, unlike football. It?s quiet, unlike NASCAR. It?s complicated, unlike tennis. What?s not to love?

Watching the World Series games last week, pondering my fascination with the game, and thinking ? as always ? of home selling, I spotted some similarities.??

Teamwork is Essential

Although this blog concentrates on DIY home staging, there are times when you need to have someone else do it, ?times when you need to call in pros to get a specific job done.?

Say you want to paint your tall stairwell, but you don?t even own a ladder.?

Maybe you need to replace the plumbing behind the shower stall, but you wouldn?t know where to begin.?

Or the garage needs to be rewired to meet electrical code, and only an electrician has the right license.?

Or you need a new roof, but you?re not going up there!

Each member of a baseball team specializes in whatever his position calls for. Each one is an expert. Even though there?s less apparent teamwork in baseball than sports like hockey or football, don?t be fooled. Each team member is a specialist, but one who also supports and cooperates with his teammates.

When you're staging your own home, it's important to know when to call in an expert if that?s what it takes to get your home in shape. ?

??

Devil's in the Details

Both baseball and staging look simple when done right. But look more closely and you?ll see they both depend on subtleties that guarantee success.

One good pitcher can determine the outcome of a game, just as curb appeal can determine whether buyers want to view your home?s interior.?

One fumbled catch can lead to a home run for the other team, just the way pet odors can be a deal-breaker for a home on the market.? ?

Think like a Major League player. Take your staging seriously. Don?t be like the neighbor a friend of mine described to me last week, who said ?Why should I paint for the next owner??

Step? up to the plate, and tend to the details, so your home is the one that stands above the competition.??

Preparation Makes All the Difference

Teams that get to the World Series don?t get there by chance. They work all year to become the best athletes they can.

Selling a home shouldn?t be a last minute decision. It should be part of a plan.

Although some will disagree with me, I think any homeowner needs to be aware that some day she?ll want to sell her home. Or her heirs will.

A common phrase is, ?I?ll never move,? but statistically, Americans stay in their homes an average of just seven years. Lifestyle preferences change, families grow bigger or smaller, jobs relocate, finances force people to shift priorities.?

In other words, whatever you do to your home while you are living there is going to affect your selling price eventually. Never remodel a home in such a way that its market value will be reduced.

Don't postpone routine maintenance until the effects snowball into major repairs.?

Leo Durocher, the legendary Baseball Hall of Famer,?said,?

"There are only five things you can do in baseball ??

run, throw, catch, hit, and hit with power."

It's All About the Numbers

No sport relies more on statistics than baseball.?

Wins and losses, batting averages, on-base-percentages, runs-batted-in, slugging percentage ? that?s just the beginning.?

Team managers, owners, coaches, fans, sportswriters and gamblers all rely on complex math to predict probabilities and make decisions.

Similarly, when you?re selling your home, it helps to have good grasp of the numbers.

Have you priced it competitively??

Do you know what your monthly carrying costs are (mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities, maintenance)???

If you are negotiating with a prospective buyer, do you know in advance how flexible can you be with financing options to shape a win/win agreement??

Patience Is Your Friend

Baseball is a test of nerves and strategy.?When your home is for sale, waiting for a buyer to show up can be difficult.

Although we?ve all heard stories of people who?ve sold their homes the day they came on the market, I sometimes ask myself, ?Did they price it too low?? Even when you are impatient, a prospective buyer shouldn?t know this. That?s why I tell people not to pile moving boxes in the garage or spare bedroom. It looks like you?re in a hurry to get out of there, rather than living in a home you love. Strategy. One baseball cliche is "Hurry to lose, slow down to win."? And that?s good advice for a home seller.

Chance Plays A Major Role

Once you?ve staged your home, using the skills and resources you have, you have to accept the fact that fate takes over. You can?t call all the shots.

Sometimes, sheer coincidence steps in. A friend tells a friend who tells a friend about your home. It?s just what she?s looking for!

Or a couple out driving neighborhoods looking for real estate signs, turns onto your street, and Bingo!

Albert Pujols, a two-time World Series champ, and three-time Most Valuable Player winner, said, ?This game is really crazy. Nobody can understand it, and there are a lot of things that happen that you can?t control.? ?

The same thought was echoed by Wes Westrum, New York Giants catcher and manager, when he said, "Baseball is like church: Many attend, but few understand."

Remember that there is a buyer out there for your home. Do your best to attract him, and that?s all you can do. Your best.

The Game Ain?t Over Until It?s Over

Of course, this is one of Yogi Berra?s most famous lines, and I find myself saying it near the end of almost every baseball game. And at other times as well. It?s a Life Lesson!

In real estate transactions, snafus and surprises are common on the road between a showing and a closing. That?s the reason I never remove staging until the last possible moment.

As a seller, you can?t take your buyer for granted. Inspections, financing, contingencies, all can be bugaboos. Being a seller takes flexibility and a positive attitude. ??

?

I?m Not the Only One

Plenty of people see more to America?s favorite pastime than men hitting, running and chasing balls. Saul Steinberg, the cartoonist, wrote, ?Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self esteem.

Sounds like home-selling to me!

My best advice: Listen to the coach, and play by the rules of the home staging game. The rule book I recommend is my $5 eBook, DIY Home Staging Tips to Sell Your Home Fast and For Top Dollar. It teaches you all the steps to build a winning team.??

I am rooting for you!

Bama, Oregon, K-State, ND rise to top of AP poll

Breaking down the AP college football poll after Week 9 of the regular season.

___

MAKING A STATEMENT:

Call them the fantastic four. Or maybe the final four in the race for No. 1.

Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame hold the top four spots in The Associated Press college football poll released Sunday.

The Crimson Tide is No. 1 for the ninth straight week and the Ducks are No. 2 for the sixth consecutive week.

The third-ranked Wildcats and fourth-ranked Fighting Irish each moved up a spot after Florida lost 17-9 to Georgia. That dropped the Gators from third to eighth.

The BCS standings came out later Sunday and Alabama was first again, but Kansas State and Notre Dame followed with Oregon fourth.

The Tide, Ducks, Wildcats and Irish will spend the last month of the regular season competing against each other from a far, vying for two spots in the BCS national championship game. All of them could get to Dec. 2, BCS selection day, unbeaten.

The finish line is now in sight, but no peeking.

"It's tough not to, knowing you're so close, but man, you just have to focus in on next week, focus in on next game," K-State wide receiver Chris Harper said after the Wildcats' 55-24 victory against Texas Tech. "It's really hard not to look ahead, but the position that we're in, you can't do it."

Alabama and Oregon both face big tests Saturday. Emerging Heisman trophy contender AJ McCarron and the Tide go to Baton Rouge, La., to face No. 5 LSU in a game that could decide the SEC West.

The Pac-12's game of the year was supposed to be Saturday as well. The Ducks will be at No. 18 Southern California, but the Trojans are coming off their second loss of the season. USC fell 39-36 at Arizona and hasn't looked much like a team that started the season No. 1.

Still, Matt Barkley and crew figure to provide some resistance to an Oregon team that has yet to enter the fourth quarter of a game with the result in doubt.

Kansas State is home against Big 12 rival Oklahoma State. Notre Dame, coming off a 30-13 victory at Oklahoma, takes on Pittsburgh in South Bend, Ind.

A BCS mess looms. Alabama's position as No. 1 is safe as long as the defending national champions keep winning. The other three will jockey for the position behind the Tide, and voters (both in the AP poll and the two used in the BCS standings) will parse scores and schedules, looking for the slightest flaws to separate the Ducks, Wildcats and Irish.

Good luck with that.

___

MOVING UP

Dismissed after getting thumped at South Carolina, No. 7 Georgia moved up five spots in the latest rankings and moved into position to win a second straight SEC East title.

The Bulldogs put together by far their best defensive performance of the season against the Gators. It really came out of nowhere. Georgia, with a lineup full of future NFL draft picks, had been allowing more than 200 yards per game on the ground over its last three.

All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones, who has been slowed by injuries, was spectacular with 13 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles. Florida ran for only 81 yards.

Georgia needs to beat Mississippi and Auburn to book a trip to the Southeastern Conference title game for the sixth time in 12 seasons under coach Mark Richt. Yes, the Bulldogs have benefited from a favorable schedule the past two seasons, missing the best teams from the SEC West. But you can only play the teams on your schedule and Georgia has beaten almost all of them.

Still, many Bulldogs fans have been exasperated by their team and coach in recent seasons. Georgia hasn't won the SEC since 2005, and while Florida, Alabama, Auburn and LSU have won the last six national titles, Georgia hasn't won any.

That's a high standard to meet, but that's where the bar is set for the top SEC programs these days.

___

MOVING DOWN

USC, now that's a disappointing team.

Even after losing at Stanford in September, the Trojans were No. 10 with a chance to work their way back into the national title race. Another sloppy performance led to their second loss of the season.

The Trojans had more than 600 yards, including 493 passing by Barkley, against Arizona. Star receiver Marqise Lee had 16 catches for a Pac-12 record 345 yards. But USC committed five turnovers and 13 penalties and let a 15-point, second-half lead slip away.

Coach Lane Kiffin's talented team has been its own worst enemy all season. USC is the most penalized team in the country, averaging 10.3 per game for 84.6 yards. The Trojans are tied for 94th in the nation with 18 giveaways.

The irony is USC will still be front and center in the national championship chase.

The Trojans play Oregon on Saturday, and finish their regular season on Nov. 24 at home against Notre Dame. The Trojans still control their destiny in the Pac-12 South, and could reach the conference title game, possibly for a rematch with Oregon.

Playing spoiler, however, is not what the Trojans had in mind this season.

___

IN AND OUT

From undefeated to unranked.

Rutgers pulled off that trick with a ghastly performance at home against Kent State.

The Scarlet Knights committed seven turnovers and the Golden Flashes won 35-23 for the Mid-American Conference's fourth victory this season against the Big East. For the second straight week, a ranked and unbeaten Big East team lost to a MAC team. Last week, it was Cincinnati losing at Toledo.

Rutgers, which only had six turnovers coming into the game, had been ranked 18th.

The silver lining for the Scarlet Knights is they are still very much in play for their first Big East championship. They play Army next week before finishing the season against Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and No. 12 Louisville.

The Big East didn't have much chance of sending a team to the national title game, but those nonconference loses have taken some of the luster off what was set to be an intriguing league race.

Elsewhere in the MAC, Ohio University also went from unbeaten to unranked. The Bobcats, ranked for the first time since 1968, lost 23-20 to league rival Miami of Ohio.

MAC teams Toledo (8-1, 5-0), Kent State (7-1, 4-0), Northern Illinois (8-1, 5-0) and Ohio (7-1, 3-1) all received votes in the latest AP Top 25.

Also falling out of the rankings was Michigan. Moving back in was No. 21 Nebraska, No. 24 Arizona and No. 25 UCLA.

___

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Louisville has not been ranked this high since it reached No. 8 early in the 2007 season, the year after Bobby Petrino coached the Cardinals to the Orange Bowl, and then bolted for the NFL.

Louisville fell out of the rankings in September 2007, and didn't get back in until the start of this season.

___

ODDS AND ENDS

Newly ranked Arizona and UCLA play at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. ... No. 16 Texas A&M is at No, 17 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs, who were trounced by Alabama 38-7 on Saturday, will try to avoid a two-game losing streak after starting the season 7-0.

Ukraine votes, Yanukovich's party expected to keep majority

* Yanukovich's main rival in jail as vote goes ahead

* His Regions party likely to secure slim majority

* But faces new opposition force led by popular boxer

* Observers will pronounce on whether vote free and fair

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainians voted on Sunday in an election that President Viktor Yanukovich's pro-business ruling party seemed likely to win, but it may now face a re-energized opposition which has promised to fight growing authoritarianism and corruption.

With Yanukovich's main rival, Yulia Tymoshenko, in jail and with the West seeing the poll as a test of Ukraine's commitment to democracy, interest will focus on the judgment that international monitors will hand down on Monday.

The former Soviet republic of 46 million is more isolated internationally than it has been for years. Tymoshenko's continued imprisonment has put it at odds with the United States and the European Union, while Russia turns a deaf ear to Kiev's calls for cheaper gas.

At home, the government's popularity has been hit by tax and pensions policies and a failure to stamp out corruption, prompting it to shy away from painful reforms that could secure much-needed IMF lending to shore up its export-driven economy.

Despite this and growing apathy among an electorate tired of political bickering, opinion polls have shown Yanukovich's Party of the Regions leading the joint opposition, which includes Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party, and a liberal party headed by boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko.

Commentators expect Regions, bankrolled by industrialists and drawing on state resources, to keep a majority in the 450-seat assembly with support possibly from communists and some independents.

"I have voted for stability, for the country's economic development, for the improvement of living standards," Yanukovich told reporters as he cast his ballot in Kiev.

Even if it wins, Regions faces a tougher time in parliament.

Klitschko, the WBC world heavyweight champion, who heads the UDAR (Punch) party, says he will team up with the opposition led by former economy minister Arseny Yatsenyuk to fight corruption, which they say deters entrepreneurial spirit and foreign investment.

From her jail in Kharkiv in Ukraine's northeast, Tymoshenko issued a statement that Yanukovich, who comes up for re-election in 2015, would set up a "dictatorship and never again give up power by peaceful means".

Tymoshenko was jailed for seven years last year for abuse of office relating to a 2009 gas deal with Russia which she made when she was prime minister. The Yanukovich government says the agreement saddled Ukraine with an enormous price for gas supplies.

"I am voting for my mother's freedom, for freedom to political prisoners, for justice and so that we do not wake up behind barbed wire tomorrow," Tymoshenko's daughter Yevgenia said at the polling station.

Voters' frustration with both the current and the previous cabinets plays into the hands of newcomer Klitschko, who on Sunday urged voters to "vote as your heart tells you".

"I voted for UDAR as it is a new force," said Valentyn, 45, as he walked out of a polling station in Kiev. "I am sick of the old ones. Something needs to be changed."

"We have seen some parties in power and others as well," said Tetyana, 27, referring to Batkivshchyna and the Regions. "We have seen the results."

Even in Donetsk, Yanukovich's main stronghold in the east of the country, many voters said they were disillusioned by the government's record.

"I voted for the Regions Party but simply because it is the lesser of the evils. I can't say I am a great fan of the Regions, but all the rest are worse," said 58-year-old Viktor Grigoryev, a head of section in the construction sector.

"They (the Regions) have the experience of working in posts of responsibility and have proven they can do things," he added.

Viktoriya, aged 45, who works in the state housing sector, said she had also voted for the Regions and applauded the development during the June Euro-2012 soccer championship.

"They built an airport in Donetsk, carried out the Euro football here. They added to my Mum's pension. All the 'orange' people used to do was talk but do nothing," she said referring to previous governments of the jailed Tymoshenko.

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE PROMISE

The government raised public sector wages and pensions ahead of the vote, recovering some of its lost support at the cost of widening the budget deficit which tripled year-on-year to $2 billion for the period of January to August. Ukraine's economy is vulnerable to falling demand for steel and other exports.

The Regions has also promised to make Russian an official state language alongside Ukrainian - a move aimed at winning back disenchanted supporters in Russian-speaking areas of the east and south but which alienates many voters elsewhere.

Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. and were to close at 8 p.m (2 p.m. EDT) with exit polls following swiftly afterwards.

Of the 450 seats in the single-chamber parliament, 225 will be filled by voters casting ballots for parties to send candidates from a list.

The other half will be decided by voting for individual candidates on a first-past-the-post basis - a feature re-introduced by the Regions which is assumed to favor the party.

Though results will begin to trickle in almost immediately, an accurate overall picture will emerge only much later on Monday since counts in individual constituencies take longer.

International observers from the OSCE European security and human rights body are due to give their judgment on Monday on how fair and free they perceived the poll to have been.

A positive assessment could improve Yanukovich's image before Ukraine takes over the organization's chair in January.

Top 6 Myths, Facts About Flood, Hurricane Insurance Protection ...

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- As Hurricane Sandy make its way along the Atlantic Coast, disaster experts are reminding U.S. residents that flooding is the country's number one natural hazard, according to the National Flood Insurance Program, which Congress created in 1968.

Meteorologists were calling Hurricane Sandy an "extra-tropical cyclone" on Friday when it was a category 1 storm.

When Hurricane Isaac came ashore in the Gulf Coast in August, its strength as a Category 1 hurricane was weaker than that of Hurricane Katrina, which hit seven years ago. But in both storms, flooding was the main cause of damage. Many people don't realize until it's too late that flooding may not be covered by their regular homeowner's policy.

Here are six myths about natural disaster insurance that the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and other insurance experts try to dispel.

The type of natural disaster doesn't matter.

Insurer MetLife says damage from windstorm or hail and lightning is included in most homeowners' policies, whereas damage from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are usually not.

Homes and businesses along a shoreline often have to have special insurance policy endorsements that cover water damage due to high winds, according to Judith Spry, partner in the insurance claims services practice at BDO Consulting, which provides litigation, investigation, restructuring and risk advisory services to major corporations, law firms, insurance companies, financial services entities and government organizations.

Despite misconceptions, you can get flood insurance nationwide and if you live in a floodplain or high-flood risk area, the NFIP says.

You can't get flood insurance if your property has been flooded before.

For people who don't already have flood insurance, it is most likely too late to get it for those homes that sustain flood damage from Hurricane Isaac, but it is possible to get it next time, said the NFIP.

Though most insurance policies don't include flood protection, coverage can be purchased from the federal government.

You can only buy flood insurance if your mortgage broker requires it.

If you have a federally insured mortgage and live in a high-risk flood zone, mortgage companies will often require flood insurance to secure your loan.

If you live in a high-risk flood zone and receive federal disaster assistance after a flood, you will be required to purchase and maintain flood insurance until your loan is paid off. In this case, if you don't buy flood insurance and another flood damages your property, a request for federal disaster assistance could be denied.

You can't get flood insurance if you live in a low-to-moderate flood-risk area at a lower cost.

The NFIP says you can get flood insurance if you live outside a floodplain or in a low-to-moderate flood-risk area, and at lower cost.

Homeowners insurance is usually based on the cost to rebuild rather than the current market value of a home, according to the MetLife Auto & Home Insurance Literacy study from August 2010.

Spry said home and business owners should make sure they have coverage for replacement costs rather than actual cash value. Depending on how big your house is, how old it is and what it costs to replace it, she said the higher insurance premium may be worth the expense of the replacement cost in the long run.

Start the insurance claims process as soon as possible.

The NFIP recommends three steps once you have flooding.

First, you should call your agent or insurance company to file a claim and an adjustor should contact you within a few days. You should know the name of your insurance company, your policy number and contact information where you can be reached.

Second, the NFIP recommends you separate undamaged from damaged property and take photographs of the latter, including discarded objects, structural damage and standing floodwater levels and make a list of damaged or lost items, including date of purchase, value and receipts if possible.

Third, your adjuster will provide you a Proof of Loss form for your official claim for damages, which you must file with your insurance company within 60 days of the flood.

You should receive your claim payment after you and the insurer agree on the amount of damages and the insurer has your complete, accurate, and signed Proof of Loss form. If major catastrophic flooding occurs, it may take longer to process claims, according to the NFIP.

You don't need a public adjuster on a big claim.

Spry says you do not need a public adjuster.

Public adjusters, who work for you and not the insurance company, will take a percentage of a claim even if the insured is investing a significant amount of time, such as preparing forms, for the process.

She recommends having an accounting firm to provide claims preparation coverage.

EczemaAccording to recent studies eczema has been linked to a weak immune system. Eczema is not only unpleasant or debilitating but it is painful too. There is no quick magical remedy to cure this problem but lifestyle changes along with some simple home remedies can really make a difference in your life.

Top Home Remedies For Eczema

Sugar-oil Scrub

This scrub can be used daily to scrub the eczema-affected parts. Sugar-oil scrub has shown good results on people suffering with eczema. You can prepare this mix and store it in airtight containers for future use. Mix 1 cup of light oil (olive oil or grape seed oil) and 2 cups of granulated sugar, you may also add a few drops of any essential oil.

Fold it in and rub this on the affected areas.. Scrub both hands thoroughly and then wash off. This will treat the eczema naturally by reducing the flakiness and dryness of the skin.

Oatmeal Soak

In a large bowl, pour some luke-warm water. To the water, add 8 tablespoons of colloidal oatmeal. To make colloidal oatmeal at home you can just use a grinder to ground normal oatmeal into fine powder.

Oatmeal Soak

Soak your body or the effected regions (hands, feet etc) in this for 15 minutes and then wash off. This treatment helps to alleviate itching and can be done every day.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel is really effective against most types of skin conditions. It reduces inflammation, itching and helps the wounds to recover. Snip off a stem from a aloe vera plant and extract the fresh and pure aloe pulp. Apply this on the affected areas and let it dry. Ensure that you apply them in-between the fingers of the hands and feet as well. Wash off with water. You must do this every day to get good results.

Cold Milk

Whenever you feel desire to itch the affected regions, control yourself because you?ll only worsen he condition. Get a cloth and put it in some cold milk.

Cold Milk

Let the cloth soak up a bit of the milk and then put this cloth on top the itchy part. You?ll notice that the itchiness vanishes almost immediately.

Cucumber

If you?re suffering from peeling of the skin due to extreme dryness, cucumber can help you! Grate some cucumber and put it on your hands. Let the cucumber work on your skin for at least 15 minutes before washing it off. Cucumber deeply moisturizes and nourishes the skin. Do this 3 times a week.

Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is one of best ingredients to battle the ?eczema terror. Manuka honey is an active form of honey found in New Zealand. When taken internally, Manuka honey strengthens the immune system. To treat eczema you?ll need to apply it directly on the skin.

Manuka Honey

It is stickier than the commercial honey that we normally use, so I would suggest you wrap a cling film around the hands to prevent it from sticking anywhere. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash off thoroughly. It takes at least a month of regular usage to actually see some results but you?ll get it for sure (trust me on that!).

Tests show military drones could refuel themselves mid-air

22 hrs.

U.S. military flight tests have shown how drones could handle midair refueling by themselves, without human pilots. That raises the possibility of automated "flying gas stations" topping off robotic aircraft over future battlefields.

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently flew two modified RQ-4 Global Hawk drones in close proximity to simulate?midair refueling. The Global Hawks, huge drones with 131-foot wingspans used for high-altitude surveillance, flew in formation with less than 100 feet separating the refueling "probe" on one and refueling "receiver" on the other during a two-and-a-half hour flight test.

"The goal of this demonstration was to create the expectation that future [High Altitude Long Endurance] aircraft will be refueled in flight," said Jim McCormick, program manager at DARPA.

DARPA had kicked off its two-year Autonomous High-Altitude Refueling (AHR) program with the expectation that just one out of six aerial refueling attempts would prove successful. But the final analysis suggested drones could achieve a much better success rate of three out of five attempts.Neither Global Hawk drone needed human guidance during the final flight test at the high altitude of 44,800 feet (8 miles). The drones also maintained their tight formation despite turns and wind gusts of up to 23 mph.

The results from the AHR program that ended on Sept. 30 mean the U.S. military has a good chance of extending the duration and range of its?drone swarms. Manned fighter jets and bombers already do midair refueling from standard tanker aircraft, but many drones can't match the speed, altitude or performance of existing tanker aircraft.

McCormick suggested that the drone flight-testing could lead to "non-traditional tanker concepts," perhaps a reference to automated drone tankers. Such an idea could work very well for the range of midsize or large drones that depend on jet fuel.

The U.S. military has also played with other refueling ideas for drones.?Lasers could do midair recharging?for smaller, battery-powered drones, such as the Stalker drone flown by U.S. Special Forces. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy has plans for its aircraft-size X-47B drone ? designed to take off and land on Navy aircraft carriers ? to autonomously handle aerial refueling with standard tanker aircraft.

PFT: Bears' Jeffery has broken hand

Philadelphia Eagles v Cleveland BrownsGetty Images

Joe Haden returned to the Browns Monday after his four-game suspension, apologizing to the team and its fans.

Haden tested positive for Adderall, and called it a ?very dumb mistake.?

?It was just a young man making a decision I shouldn?t have made,? he said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Asked if he thought the suspension was excessive, he replied, hilariously: ?God, do I??

In his absence, the Browns went 0-4 (which they may well have done in his presence), but he said the last four weeks have been difficult for him.

?I would like to apologize to my fans, Haden Nation, the Cleveland Browns organization, front office, all the coaches. I hurt a lot of people,? he said. ?I hurt myself for sure. But I hurt a lot of people with the decision I made, and I just want everybody to know that I sincerely apologize from the bottom of my heart. There?s no script. Nobody told me what to say. I just feel that and I want everybody to know that it was a mistake.

?Everybody makes mistakes, but my mistake happened to hurt a lot more people than I thought.?

And whether it falls under league guidelines or not, he at least deserves a kangaroo court fine for declaring ?Haden Nation,? which is one of the most ridiculous things I?ve heard all day.

UPDATE 4:37 p.m. ET: OK, apparently ?Haden Nation,? is the name of his charitable foundation. Which isn?t nearly as ridiculous as it sounded without that context. I will now fine myself, with the check payable to the Human Fund.

Are you Branding Yourself or Your Network Marketing Company ...

Are you Branding Yourself or Your Network Marketing Company?

Today when I was out doing my retail I put my fleece on over my T-Shirt and realised, as both were branded with my Network Marketing Conpany's name, that both were advertising my MLM.

It made me think, about how much I have learned recently and my beliefs have changed.

About two years ago, a number of my Network Marketing Company 'Leaders' were telling us to make sure we wore our branded goods when we were doing work for our business. ? When we were doing retail, out and about, or doing home meetings, branded goods would help people recognise the company name.

Now if you read about me today, you may think I am a nodding dog and totally took that on board and wear my branded polo shirt ?and fleece everywhere I go.

Yes, I do sometimes wear my polo shirt when doing retail (easy to wash, wear and iron - and I don't need to think what to wear ...).

And I have been known to wear my branded fleece (see above) ...

And yes I do often wear my Branded Waterproof Jacket when I am out and about (well it does rain a lot here, is great protection and my Upline gave it to me when she won it in a raffle).

So, to quote what I said earlier, we were told that?"branded goods would help people recognise the company name."

Ah, recognise the COMPANY NAME.

NOT recognise ME ...

And there is, for me, a potentital problem.

People would instantly recognise the company, not me.

People see the company, perhaps know we are wanting other people to start their own business, and speak to someone else.

People see the company, realise we do many products, and order from someone else.

Get it?

Wait a minute! ? Surely I'm not saying that is wrong ....

Isn't it good for our Company Name to be out here, to be recognised?

The Main Problems I see about concentrating our efforts on advertsing our MLM or Network Marketing Company are:

1. ? It's all about being the same! ? Just like a school uniform, if we all wear the 'branded clothes' all the time we all look the same, there is no difference. ? So people are recognising the company, the uniformity, not the individuals. ? The Company is promoted, not us.

People may realise the Company is recruting or selling products,?not?that I am doing it in my own business.

2. ?If, god forbid, something happens to the company, and that is all we have been advertising, our main or only source of income could go or be damaged. ? ? And don't say it won't happen to you.

As my friend?Gavin Mountford?reminds us in the First Week's Videos in our?Networking Superstars?Tribe Traffic Mastery, if we rely on one company or source of income it could be a problem

3. ?Although I am fortunate that my company is innovative and changes with the time, if I?only?use my Company-Branded Website or Online Shop, we could have the same problem again - the Company being recognised and not me.

So what's the solution?

As I have been learning Relationship and Attraction Marketing, I have been taught time and time again to brand myself. ?You can read more about this in my article

Setting Up Your Blog for Attraction and Network Marketing ? Important Things to Consider

So I would say the idea is to brand and market myself, get my NAME out there, be recognised for the services and value I provide NOT the company.

Some of the advantages of this are:

?

1. ?People will be getting to know you, and the service and support you can give others.

2. ?If you were to change MLM or your company was to fold, people are still connecting with you.

3. ?People may say no to your company if that is all you are offering, but if you BRAND YOURSELF they will hopefully build up a relationship with you. ? Through time, people who originally may have just said NO to your company and fled, may end up buying into other goods, trainings and tools you can offer them.

I am sure you can think of many other advantages, but if I was to ask you to do one thing that would help you long-term in your MLM or Network Marketing Business, it would be to BRAND and MARKET YOURSELF NOT JUST YOUR MLM.

Becoming the Person You Always Wanted to Marry | Inner Works ...

By Suzanne E. Harrill

Do you ever experience any of the following dilemmas? You are married and don?t want to be. You feel lonely with a partner and have found marriage very disillusioning and disappointing. Have you ever wanted a different partner, yet did not have the courage to go through the separation and divorce process? Have you been rejected by a partner and felt you could not survive alone or decided it is not worth trusting again and that it is better to say single? Maybe you want to be married for such reasons as companionship for old age or simply to keep the lonliness at bay. Are you recently widowed and thrown on your own for the first time with no survival skills for self-sufficiency? Or have you found that you do not want a partner, but find it difficult to take the judgements and comments of others that think this is odd? You are not alone.

These are very common dilemmas and the solution to each one is the same, turn inward to create a better relationship with yourself. It is never too late to learn to become the person you always wanted to marry. Focus on knowing and healing your issues, getting your needs met, and loving yourself, rather than focusing on what you do not have in your outer world. The secret is to find friendship and fulfillment within and to drop the illusion that you must have the perfect partner or situation to make you okay and happy. As you discover that you are a whole and complete person within, you will live happily ever after with or without a partner. Make a conscious choice to face and heal your issues and move out of fear, neediness, and unawareness. Two things may help you accept your current situation as ?the best of all possible worlds,? as Voltaire said in his classic,?Candid.?One is to further your personal power in managing your life and two is to update your faulty belief system. The paradox is that as you do the inner work to heal yourself and expand your awareness, it positively affects your current situation, whatever it may be.

True Power

What is self-empowerment? It is acting responsibly as a mature adult to make decisions that support your needs, wants, and well-thought-out value system. A strong base of self-esteem supports you, as you grow in your ability to know, love, accept, and express your true self (as opposed to your conditioned self). Here you live with a sense of control over your life, not turning your power over to others to make decisions for you. It is living your life with a connection to your inner spiritual Self as well. From this place, you know how to meet most of your own needs and wants in healthy ways so you are not needy, demanding, and full of unmet expectations. This may sound like a pretty big goal; however, it is the way out of living life based on the unhealthy emotional dependency, insecurity, and control that plague many unhappy people. Instead of hoping a person or a perfect relationship will fix everything not going well in your life, you take responsibility for your own happiness.

Your only true place of power is over your inner world of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, and choices. Why not expand your own awareness of yourself and learn to be what you are looking for, rather than focusing outside yourself, searching for that perfect partner, being dissatisfied with the one you have, feeling you have the wrong one, or even thinking you have to have a partner? As you deepen your awareness of yourself and grow more whole and complete, you accept that you have emotional wounds that need healing, you realize that you have ideas running your life that do not serve you, and you see the need to update the guiding beliefs upon which you base your life. You will find that many of your beliefs are not true. For example, many of you were taught that it is bad and selfish to focus on your own needs and wishes. If you were taught it is better to give and not think of yourself, your needs, wants, or goals, then you might miss the fact that this belief turns you into a submissive, emotional doormat, and victim with weak emotional boundaries. As you heal yourself and become more whole, then, paradoxically, you will find all your relationships will improve or those that do not support your best interests may disappear.

The best way to have a good relationship is to become your own best friend. As you listen to your inner conflicts, needs, goals, etc., you grow in your awareness. Over time you stop expecting others to heal you because you are healing yourself. Journal writing or talking to yourself on a daily basis is important. By the way, bringing out the best in yourself brings out the best in your partner. When you heal your unhealthy patterns of thinking, behaving, and communicating, you impact your current relationship. The new people you attract and the ?old? relationships that continue will just ?happen? to be closer to what you were looking for in the first place. As you grow in your ability to know yourself, take care of your needs and wants, develop your talents and interests, and love yourself, then you will automatically attract people who reflect your greater harmony, beauty, intimacy, awareness, and love.

Exercises

Here are two exercises to help you become more aware of this person you are becoming instead of thinking your needs must be met from a partner. The first one defines what you are looking for in your partner and, therefore, yourself. The second one helps you recognize your belief system to see where updates are in order.

Exercise #1. Daydream for a minute and imagine you are meeting the perfect partner for you. What qualities would this person possess physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually? Make a list including your needs, your wants, and your wishes, hopes, and dreams. Here is an example: I am looking for a partner who is physically active, plays tennis, likes to share at a deep, intimate level, acknowledges his/her own problems and issues, and is open to therapy if needed. I am looking for someone who is creative, non-judgmental, does not blame, criticize, or project their ?stuff? onto others, admits faults and problems, takes responsibility for solving her/his problems, and who knows and is actualizing their spiritual purpose. I need someone who is affectionate, emotionally and physically available, is warm and friendly, is a handy person around the house, balances work and play, and is financially independent.

Make your list as detailed as you can. Now for the important part of the exercise, check off the aspects that you already recognize in yourself. Notice which ones you do not have. These are imbalances in your personality system and, thus, are areas to develop as you are becoming the person you are looking for in a marriage partner.

Whenever you find yourself looking outside yourself to give you what you are unwilling to give yourself, then you set your relationships up for disappointment. This is a child-like position upon which to base your life. When you expect anyone to give to you what you are unwilling to give yourself, you stop your own progress. If, for example, you are insecure, a partner can only fill your security needs for brief moments; you have to learn to do this for yourself to truly be happy and live a rich life.

Updating Guiding Beliefs

The next exercise introduces you to a life long study, that of recognizing your faulty guiding beliefs and updating them to higher truths. Guiding beliefs are rules from which you live your life; they are true for you, even if they are not universal truths. Many of the beliefs in your subconscious mind were etched there as a child. These beliefs act like the software in a computer telling you what to do. It is natural to pattern your responses to life from your experiences and observations of others? interpretation of reality?that of your parents, family, schools, religions, and society. Many of these beliefs, however, are dysfunctional. Therefore, your belief structure may not be sound in some places. On top of this, as children we can only perceive things about life and relationships from the developmental stage we are in at any given stage; thus, we do not perceive everything accurately even when there are healthy beliefs and behaviors being modeled to us. In this exercise we will emphasize your guiding beliefs about relationships.

Exercise #2. Write down the beliefs that you have about relationships. Imagine yourself as a child and what you observed from your parents. Look where you are unhappy today in your current situation and go behind it to what your beliefs must be. After you write several, notice especially the ones that are not true for you any more. Also note the ones you feel are not universal truths because you observe other people?s lives proving you wrong. Next rewrite them. This list may include concepts that are really not true to your intellect, but rule you at an emotional level and many times unconsciously.

For example, you may have learned in your family of origin beliefs such as, ?It is not safe to reveal inner secrets because your partner will use them against you at a later time; so do not share too much,? or ?Only love as deeply as your partner does, so you will not get hurt,? or ?Women sacrifice their needs to make the relationship work, so I really do not want a relationship,? or ?People who argue have bad relationships, so I refuse to disagree and show my true feelings; I play it safe.? You may have learned immature beliefs such as, ?I am not a whole person unless I am in a relationship and, therefore, I over-focus on finding that special someone or getting my partner to pay attention to me,? or ?My parents will not approve of me if I do not get married,? or ?I am thirty years old, I better marry while I have the chance,? or ?You can?t teach old dogs new tricks, so I need to dump my partner,? or ?I don?t deserve to have a relationship, I?m not good enough,? or ?There is only one perfect person for me and I have not found him/her, therefore I shall never have a relationship,? or ?Women/men always hurt you.? All of these beliefs can be updated to higher truths.

Let us update two of these beliefs that may be hurting some of you. One is the belief that there is one perfect person for you. If you believe this and end up divorced from this person, you may miss an opportunity to have another relationship. Perhaps you may never find a relationship because you are always waiting for the ?right one? to show up. Or you may marry and not put your whole heart into the experience once the infatuation wears off and disillusion sets in. This is when your issues come to the forefront. It is important to give your computer, or subconscious mind, a corrected program. To rewrite this false belief you could say, ?There are several people that I can live a loving, caring relationship with in life. I know there are no perfect people, so I forgive my partner for her/his faults. I notice when my standards are too high.? Write some of your own beliefs and update them. Say them to yourself often.

As you update your guiding beliefs, you will find that you will improve what you experience in life. The thoughts that you think influence your outer reality?what you look for and attract and respond to in life. What you focus upon, consciously and unconsciously, moves you towards them as goals. You are presently experiencing the results of your past thoughts and beliefs which became goals, many of which were set up unconsciously by you. If you want different results in the future, it is time to figure out what the hidden, false beliefs are that were learned from childhood or from dysfunctional relationships in your past. These are ruling you at a very deep level and creating what you do not want. Instead, focus on what you do want, moving in a direction that is more wholesome.

Whether or not you are in a significant relationship at this moment, consider expanding your awareness of yourself, who you are, what you want, what you value, and what you believe. As you work on becoming the person you always wanted to marry, you will have a richer more meaningful life. Then the relationships that show up in your life will be more rewarding. If you already share your life with an intimate partner, you can grow to understanding that this person is an important part of your journey. You can open your mind to working with what comes along your path by being with her/him. You can give each other support and encouragement and enjoy companionship. Two self-actualizing people realize when their own insecurities and past experiences get in the way of happiness in their relationship. They each take personal responsibility to heal their own life and to update their individual belief system. This includes such things as not blaming the partner for not filling-up their emotional black holes, or the dependency needs not met in childhood. It includes taking risks to get ones own needs met so they are not projected onto the partner.

In today?s world you have many choices besides marriage. You can choose to delay marriage, not marry, or divorce to live alone or to find a new partner when dissatisfied. Having the power of choice is good, yet many people are still unhappy. Many think they should be married or that they are missing something if they are not in a relationship. They are, but so are married people who are not single. Those in a committed relationship can get disillusioned because the partner does not satisfy all their needs and expectations. Some may even think, ?I married the wrong one.? Becoming the person you always wanted to marry is a solution to all these dilemmas. It focuses attention within self to become a complete being rather than turning your power over to someone outside yourself to feel good. You no longer want to find the perfect partner to fill in your missing pieces. As you recognize and move your life towards a place of wholeness, you can enjoy whichever scenario you are currently living.
